One such example is Joana Camarena, a first-generation college student whose focused approach to education and career-building stands out at a time when financial questions often dominate academic narratives.
Currently a senior pursuing business administration, Camarena discovered her passion early during an accounting class at Yuba College. Inspired by her professor, who shared a similar cultural background, she developed a strong interest in accounting an interest that quickly evolved into a clear career path. Unlike many students who take time to define their goals, Camarena approached her education with a deliberate plan: to build financial literacy and create opportunities her family did not have access to.
Her ambitions are equally clear. She aims to become a chief financial officer while eventually launching her own business. This dual vision reflects both professional aspiration and entrepreneurial drive, aligning with a broader trend of students seeking both corporate stability and independent ventures.
When considering transfer options, Camarena was drawn to Chico State after receiving a personal outreach from its College of Business. The emphasis on internships and student support played a crucial role in her decision, underscoring how institutions are increasingly competing to provide career-focused pathways amid rising concerns about return on educational investment.
Since transferring in 2024, Camarena has maximized every opportunity available to her. She added a second major in finance and quickly became involved in student organizations, including the Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi, where she took on the role of treasurer within a semester. Faculty members have noted her initiative, particularly her early engagement with career fairs that led to her first internship.
Beyond academics, campus resources such as El Centro and the Educational Opportunity Program have provided a strong sense of belonging and support, especially important for first-generation students navigating unfamiliar systems. These communities helped her build confidence, particularly in networking a skill she developed through attending professional events and interacting with industry leaders.
Her efforts culminated in a competitive internship with global accounting firm KPMG during the 2026 audit season. The experience proved both challenging and rewarding, giving her real-world exposure to a fast-paced professional environment. Impressively, she secured a full-time job offer from the firm, which she will begin in 2027.
As she prepares to graduate, Camarena’s journey reflects a blend of determination, institutional support, and strategic decision-making—an encouraging narrative at a time when financial concerns continue to shape the future of education.
