The global financial industry has reached a defining moment in artificial intelligence adoption, according to Finastra’s Financial Services State of the Nation 2026 report. With only 2% of financial institutions reporting no use of AI, the technology has officially moved from pilot projects to widespread execution across global banking and fintech ecosystems.
The study highlights how financial organizations are now integrating AI across payments, lending, compliance, and customer engagement not just to improve efficiency, but to build resilience and trust in an increasingly digital economy. Six in ten institutions reported enhanced AI capabilities over the past year, underscoring a shift toward scaling intelligent technologies responsibly and securely.
Security and Modernisation Take Center Stage
Alongside the AI surge, cybersecurity has emerged as a top investment priority. Institutions expect their security spending to rise by an average of 40% in 2026, reflecting mounting concerns over digital risk, data privacy, and regulatory scrutiny. The report suggests that as banks deepen their reliance on technology, maintaining the integrity and safety of systems will be as critical as innovation itself.
Modernisation, too, has become a central focus, with 87% of respondents planning to upgrade infrastructure within the next 12 months. Many institutions are turning to fintech partnerships — cited by 54% of participants as they pursue agility, operational efficiency, and faster innovation cycles.
Customer Experience and Confidence Remain Strong
Customer expectations continue to redefine competitiveness. Nearly four in ten institutions (38%) identified personalisation and improved service as their clients’ top priorities, while just 4% offer no personalised services at all. The message is clear: meaningful digital experiences now sit at the heart of loyalty and growth.
Despite ongoing global disruptions, confidence in the sector remains remarkably high. Eighty-seven percent of professionals surveyed expressed optimism about personal career prospects, and 86% are positive about the future of their institutions as technology continues to evolve.
AI Becomes the Industry’s Core Fabric
AI has become the connective tissue of modern finance. The top applications include risk management and fraud detection (71%), data analysis and reporting (71%), customer service and support (69%), and document intelligence management (69%). Emerging priorities for 2026 include AI-driven personalisation, agentic AI for workflow automation, and strong governance frameworks to ensure explainability and compliance.
As Finastra CEO Chris Walters noted, technology choices now define trust, resilience, and customer experience. Financial institutions, he emphasized, must innovate quickly yet responsibly as they navigate this new AI-driven era of global finance.
