Mercedes-Benz is once again pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation with its latest Drive Assist Pro technology, a system designed to take the stress out of driving, not just on highways but in everyday city conditions.
The journey toward autonomous driving has been decades in the making. Back in 1999, Mercedes introduced radar-enabled adaptive cruise control in the S-Class, marking the beginning of partially automated vehicles. This innovation allowed cars to adjust their speed based on traffic ahead rather than maintaining a constant pace. Over time, automakers added lane-keeping features, and now, with advanced GPS and geofencing, modern vehicles can handle most highway driving as long as drivers remain attentive.
Mercedes’ new Drive Assist Pro aims to extend that capability into urban environments—handling traffic lights, stop signs, and even speed bumps. During a recent demonstration through the busy streets of downtown San Francisco, the system showcased impressive composure. From the passenger seat, observers watched as the car smoothly navigated intersections, construction zones, and even double-parked vehicles without the engineer behind the wheel needing to intervene.
Interestingly, the first model to receive this advanced system isn’t the flagship S-Class, but the new entry-level electric CLA. Priced under $50,000, the CLA features the latest version of Mercedes’ Drive Assist suite, already improving braking and deceleration control. Drivers can now lightly apply the brakes without disabling cruise control, allowing smoother deceleration and acceleration enhancing collaboration between human and machine.
The Drive Assist Pro builds on that synergy. Using AI-driven intelligence, the car can anticipate lane changes based on the set destination and interpret both stop signs and traffic lights. Its cautious approach such as coming to a full stop at every sign may frustrate impatient drivers behind, but it demonstrates a firm commitment to safety and legal compliance.
Central to this evolution is the CLA’s identity as a software-defined vehicle (SDV). Instead of relying on dozens of electronic control units, it runs on four high-powered computers, one of which uses Nvidia’s Orin chip to handle perception and path planning.
“We’ve completely elevated our autonomous driving stack,” said Magnus Östberg, Chief Software Officer at Mercedes-Benz. “It now uses an end-to-end AI model, providing faster, smarter, and more adaptable performance whether on highways or in complex parking scenarios.”
With Drive Assist Pro, Mercedes is steering the future of driving toward a new era of intelligent autonomy one confident, careful mile at a time.
