NEW YORK — Luigi Mangione sat expressionless in a New York courtroom on Monday as prosecutors presented a series of surveillance videos they say capture both the shocking killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the suspect’s eventual arrest. The footage, some of which had never been made public before, formed the centerpiece of a crucial hearing in Mangione’s ongoing effort to have key evidence excluded from his upcoming murder trial.
Thompson, 53, was fatally shot on December 4, 2024, while walking to a Manhattan hotel to attend UnitedHealthcare’s annual investor conference — an event he was scheduled to headline. Prosecutors allege that Mangione, 27, ambushed the executive on the sidewalk before fleeing the city.
The courtroom remained silent as jurors and spectators watched the videos in sequence — from grainy security footage of the Manhattan street where Thompson was gunned down, to the tense moments of Mangione’s arrest five days later at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, nearly 230 miles (370 kilometers) from the crime scene.
In the footage, Mangione can be seen eating breakfast alone when two police officers approach his table. Maintaining a calm demeanor, he places a finger thoughtfully on his lips and rests his thumb against his chin as officers begin to speak to him. At one point, he grips a pen tightly in his right hand — his only visible sign of tension.
Prosecutors also played a 911 call from the McDonald’s manager who reported him. The manager told dispatchers that customers had recognized Mangione from news reports and online images of the suspect. She described how he had pulled a beanie low over his forehead and covered his face with a medical mask, revealing only his eyebrows as he sat quietly in the restaurant.
Following his arrest, Mangione was transported to a Pennsylvania state prison, where he was kept under constant observation in an isolated housing unit before being extradited to New York to face murder charges.
His defense team now seeks to exclude several pieces of evidence — including the handgun prosecutors say matches the weapon used in the killing — arguing they were obtained improperly. The hearing marks a pivotal moment in a case that has drawn national attention for its shocking circumstances and high-profile victim.
